How Do I Prepare For My Own Death?

Written by Changing Tides | Jul 17, 2025 12:18:39 AM

It’s a question often whispered, sometimes avoided — but always deeply human. At Changing Tides, we believe that preparing for death isn’t a morbid act, but a courageous and life-affirming one.

Acknowledge the Journey

Preparing for your death doesn't mean giving up — it means stepping into your life with intention. It can be a deeply personal and empowering act that brings clarity to what truly matters.

Start by asking yourself: What legacy do I want to leave? What do I want my final days to feel like? Who do I want by my side?

Take Care of the Practical Things

Getting your affairs in order can ease the burden on loved ones and give you peace of mind. Essential steps include writing or updating your will, appointing an Enduring Power of Attorney or healthcare proxy, and considering an Advance Care Directive to document your medical and personal care wishes.

Other important tasks are documenting your funeral or farewell preferences and organizing digital estate access, such as passwords, accounts, and subscriptions. We can gently guide you through these decisions with sensitivity and support.

Make Emotional and Relational Peace

Death often brings clarity to what matters most: love, connection, and closure. Some people find comfort in saying things left unsaid, reconnecting with estranged loved ones, expressing gratitude or forgiveness, and writing legacy letters or recording personal messages.

You may also want to consider hosting a Living Wake — a beautiful opportunity to celebrate your life with the people you love, while you're still here to hear their stories and feel their love.

Create a Meaningful Legacy

Your life is more than paperwork — it’s a story, a spirit, and a collection of memories and meaning. Through our Creative Healing Workshops, you can write legacy letters or poetry, craft memory collages or tribute weavings, create a Kintsugi artwork from brokenness and beauty, make candles or nature mandalas for remembrance, and capture your values in an 'ethical will.'

These projects are not just keepsakes — they are a form of healing for you and those you’ll one day leave behind.

Let Changing Tides Walk Beside You

At Changing Tides, we support individuals who want to prepare mindfully and meaningfully for their final chapter. Whether you’re planning your farewell, seeking emotional support, or simply exploring what’s possible, we offer end-of-life doula guidance, holistic funeral and celebration services, and grief support.
